The Dark Hollow Falls Trail, located at mile 50.7 along Skyline Drive, is one of Shenandoah National Park’s most popular hikes—and for good reason.
This 1.4-mile out-and-back trail offers a rewarding waterfall view, a cascading mountain stream, and chances to spot wildlife and spring blooms.
The hike begins at the Dark Hollow Falls Parking Area and descends steeply for 0.75 miles alongside a picturesque stream to reach the base of the falls. The return trip retraces the same path—uphill this time—and is both steep and rocky.
Though short in distance, the climb back can be quite a workout, so be prepared.
Due to its popularity, the trailhead parking lot fills quickly. For a more peaceful experience and a better chance at parking, aim to visit in the early morning or late afternoon.
Along the trail, you’ll find scenic spots to stop and cool your feet in the stream. However, use caution—this is fast-moving water, and the rocks can be slick.
Bird Watchers should keep an eye out for scarlet tanagers, eastern towhees, and dark-eyed juncos in the trees.
The stream is home to brook trout, crayfish, frogs, and salamanders. In spring, wildflowers and blooming trees add even more charm to the hike.
