Hiking The Big Ferry And Earthworks Loop Trails At Skidaway Island State Park
Located just outside Savannah, Georgia, the Big Ferry and Earthworks Loop Trails are two popular hiking routes at Skidaway Island State Park.
These scenic, well-maintained paths wind through lush forests, across boardwalks, and alongside both freshwater and saltwater sloughs, offering an easy and enjoyable three-mile trek suitable for all ages.
Perfect for families and casual hikers, the trails are nearly flat and clearly marked. Leashed dogs are welcome, so feel free to bring your furry companions along for the adventure.
Along the way, you’ll pass a relic from the 1930s: one of 31 historic liquor still sites hidden within the park. You’ll also cross preserved Confederate earthworks dating back to the Civil War era.
A boardwalk leads to a three-level observation deck overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway—although the top level is currently closed due to damage, the remaining decks offer outstanding birdwatching opportunities.
This spot has amazing views and during our visit, we spotted several Great Egrets in flight and countless fiddler crabs scuttling below.
Toward the end of the trail you’ll come to some alligator ponds that provide fresh water and habitat for a variety of birds, reptiles, and amphibians. We were lucky enough to see two resident alligators during our hike.
Keep in mind that portions of the trail are prone to flooding, so be prepared for muddy stretches—and keep an eye out for fiddler crabs underfoot!
The trailhead is located near the park’s campground at the far end of Skidaway Island State Park (coordinates: 31.95376, -81.05004).
This is an interpretive trail and brochures are available at the visitor center or start of the Big Ferry Trail. Follow along the alphabetized posts and signs to learn about the unique wildlife and ecosystem of the area.
With its rich history, abundant wildlife, and serene natural beauty, the Big Ferry and Earthworks Loop Trails are a must-see.
We enjoyed them so much, we hiked them twice!
