Hiking The Sandpiper And Avian Loop Trails At Skidaway Island State Park
Located just outside Savannah, Georgia, the Sandpiper and Avian Loop Trails are two of the most popular hiking routes at Skidaway Island State Park.
These scenic trails guide hikers across salt flats and tidal creeks, through lush maritime forests, and all the way to the picturesque Intracoastal Waterway.
Perfect for families and hikers of all ages, the trails are well-maintained, easy to follow, and nearly flat, making the two-mile journey a pleasant and accessible outdoor adventure.
Leashed dogs are welcome too, so feel free to bring along your furry companions.
The Sandpiper Trail begins right behind the visitor center. A connector leads to the Avian Loop before circling back to complete the Sandpiper Trail.
The boardwalks at the beginning are ADA accessible and an excellent place to spot fiddler crabs. These little guys make their homes in the salt flats and marshlands and you can watch 100’s of them scurrying around from the boardwalk.
The trail winds through a rich diversity of ecosystems, including salt flats, tidal creeks, maritime forests, and island hammocks.
This is an interpretive trail and brochures are available at the visitor center or start of the Big Ferry Trail. Follow along the alphabetized posts and signs to learn about the unique wildlife and ecosystem of the area.
Towering live oaks and pines draped in Spanish moss create a shaded canopy, while palms add a touch of coastal jungle atmosphere.
Some areas may be muddy or wet, especially in the marsh, so be prepared for a bit of dirt and keep an eye out for scuttling fiddler crabs underfoot.
With abundant wildlife, incredible birdwatching opportunities, and stunning natural beauty, these trails are a must-see for anyone visiting Skidaway Island State Park. If you’re really lucky you might glimpse a dolphin swimming down river!
We loved them so much, we hiked them twice!
