Hiking The Gopher Trail At General Coffee State Park
The Gopher Trail is a scenic 1.5-mile loop nestled within General Coffee State Park near Nicholls, Georgia.
During our visit, it was the only open trail, as the park continues to recover from Hurricane Helene. Despite the lingering storm damage visible along the path, we thoroughly enjoyed our walk along its sandy route.
With less than 60 feet of elevation gain, the trail is easygoing and suitable for hikers of all ages. It’s also pet-friendly—leashed dogs are welcome to join the adventure.
The trailhead is located off the main park road between the two campgrounds. While parking is limited (just enough space for two cars), it’s only a short walk from the first campground and sits just behind the second.
A sign at the trailhead notes that the trail winds through the sandhill management area, which serves as habitat for the protected Gopher Tortoise and the threatened Indigo Snake.
We didn’t spot either on the trail—and honestly weren’t sure what to look for burrow wise—but we did catch a glimpse of a tortoise sprinting through our campsite!
The trail itself is well-maintained and clearly marked with green blazes. It winds through a mix of trees and palmettos, giving the hike a lush, almost jungle-like vibe.
If you’re visiting General Coffee State Park, don’t miss this trail. It’s a peaceful, beautiful walk and a great way to experience the park’s unique natural environment.
