Hiking The Juniper Lake Trail In Blackwater River State Park
The Juniper Lake Trail winds through the beautiful Blackwater River State Park in Florida, offering a scenic and family-friendly hike along the Blackwater River.
The highlight of the trail is a central loop that circles Juniper Lake—one of the park’s largest oxbow lakes.
You can access the trail from the day-use area, or if you’re camping, you can hop on from the Magnolia Loop inside the campground.
From there, the trail leads past a boardwalk to a quiet sandy beach along the river, mainly used by campers.
As you follow the trail, you’ll reach a fork where hikers can choose between the Juniper Lake loop or the boardwalk/pavilion trail.
The lake loop measures about 0.80 miles, while the boardwalk/pavilion option stretches to 1.2 miles.
Want more mileage? Combine the two for a longer, more immersive experience.
The boardwalks are a highlight—meandering through lush marsh habitats and leading to pavilions equipped with power, water, and restrooms.
These spots also offer easy river access, perfect for a swim or just relaxing by the water.
If you’re staying in the campground, a fun option is to walk to the first pavilion, launch a tube into the river, and enjoy a float back to the campground’s beach.
Floating is a popular activity here—though on our visit, the weather didn’t cooperate for it.
Along the trail, interpretive signs explain the formation of the oxbow lake and introduce you to the local flora and fauna.
Keep an eye out—this is a great place to spot wildlife, including the occasional alligator!
