Hiking The Hog Canyon And Box Canyon Trails In Dinosaur National Monument
The Hog Canyon and Box Canyon Trails are located on the Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument, offering easy and family-friendly hikes through scenic box canyons in any season.
Both trails begin at the Josie Bassett Morris Cabin parking area, situated at the end of Cub Creek Road, 10 miles east of the Quarry Visitor Center.
Josie Morris homesteaded in this area for fifty years, and her historic cabin still stands on the property.
Hog Canyon is a 1.5-mile round-trip hike with approximately 100 feet of elevation gain.
The trail features a spring-fed creek, towering Weber sandstone walls from Split Mountain, and ends in Hog Canyon.
Box Canyon is a shorter, 0.5-mile round-trip hike, also with about 100 feet of elevation gain.
It winds through dramatic Weber sandstone formations and concludes in a box canyon where Josie once penned and raised her livestock.
Hikers are encouraged to stay on the trail to avoid poison ivy, and hiking brochures are available at the visitor centers.
My husband and I loved exploring these trails and taking in the stunning landscapes. The tall grass during our hike made for an exciting adventure!
