Roaring Mountain In Yellowstone National Park
Roaring Mountain is a significant thermal area in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.
Situated north of Norris Geyser Basin, it can be easily viewed from a pullout on Grand Loop Road (44.78098, -110.74085).
The mountain is home to numerous fumaroles, or steam vents, which are the hottest hydrothermal features in the park.
Due to the intense heat, water evaporates before reaching the surface, causing steam and other gases to escape from the vents. This creates a loud hissing or whistling sound.
In the early 1900s, the number, size, and intensity of these steam vents were much greater, and the noise could be heard from miles away, making “Roaring Mountain” a fitting name.
Visitors will find a large, wheelchair-accessible parking area to view this natural wonder.
We found it truly remarkable, and it only takes a few minutes to stop and admire this fascinating mountain of steam.
