We were looking for a nice little boondocking spot for a couple of weeks before our trip to Grand Teton National Park and Cliff Creek was the perfect fit.
This camping area is located in the Bridger-Teton National Forest on Forest Road 30530 near Hoback, Wyoming. The forest service also manages the area.
Campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis and are open year-round. It is free to boondock for 14 days.
Dozens of dispersed campsites are spread along the road with most able to accommodate any size rig. Many sites are available right on the small creek running through the area.
These are boondocking spots so no hook-ups, water, bathrooms, or trashcans are available here so be prepared and pack out what you pack in.
Be sure to check on any fire restrictions in the area before starting a fire. Make sure every spark is out before going to bed or leaving camp.
Pets are allowed, but please be sure to pick up after them. Our dog loved running around camp and the cat found a nice hole he curled up in for hours.
There is no cell service here, but if you have Starlink, like we do, there are plenty of clear skies which is also good if your powering your rig with solar.
We thought we would see more wildlife but we only got one mule deer and some birds of prey as well as a pair of, I believe, sandhill cranes that kept showing up for days.
We did share our spot with a couple of prairie dogs and about a dozen garter snakes that would come out in the morning to sun and then slither away for the rest of the day.
Granite Recreation Area is just a couple miles up the road off of Highway 189. We made a trip up there one day to hike to Granite Falls and try to find some natural hot springs.
The falls were great the hot springs not so much.
They have more hikes in the area as well as a campground and the Granite Hot Springs Pool which you have to pay for.
Hoback Market is a 15-20 minute drive away and is home to the sloshie, which is an alcoholic slushy. We tried many delicious flavors and at 9-10% alcohol content was worth the price. Highly recommend.
They also have a small liquor store, gas, propane tank exchanges, and some higher than normal priced groceries.
We absolutely loved our stay at Cliff Creek and would happily spend another two weeks here.
We blew up some intertubes and played in the creek, took the dog for long walks down the road, had so many campfires, and just sat in our chairs for hours talking and enjoying the amazing scenery.
One of the top five places we have stayed in nearly four years of full-time travel.
On a side note though the road is not the best with multiple large potholes in areas, but if you take it slow you should have no issues.
Always follow the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and try to leave your camp nicer than you found it. Please research campgrounds before visiting. Rules and regulations may have changed since we stayed there.
