Fort Boonesborough, founded by Daniel Boone in 1775, was abandoned in 1778 after enduring a Shawnee attack.
It has since been reconstructed as a functioning fort complete with cabins, furnishings, blockhouses, craft shops, and a museum.
Established in 1963, Fort Boonesborough State Park officially includes the fort.
Resident artisans perform craft demonstrations and live reenactments, giving visitors a glimpse into pioneer life in late 18th-century Kentucky.
Live historians are available to answer questions and share information about their skills.
You’ll encounter blacksmiths, leatherworkers, potters, weavers, and candlemakers during your visit.
Don’t miss speaking with the barkeep at the Black Horse Tavern for engaging historical insights.
Explore every building to see authentic exhibits of the period, with informational boards providing additional history.
Products made by the artisans are available for purchase in the buildings and gift shop. I picked up a cat toy for Everest, which he loved.
Fort Boonesborough offers an educational and affordable family activity. My favorite part of the visit was watching the blacksmith at the forge, so be sure to spend some time there.
