Exploring Laurel Cave In Carter Caves State Resort Park
Located within Carter Caves State Resort Park near Olive Hill, Kentucky, Laurel Cave is one of two untouched natural caverns in the park, the other being Horn Hollow Cave, which visitors can explore without the need for a guided tour ticket.
To commence your self-guided journey through the cave, visitors must obtain a permit from the welcome center.
These permits are free and the last permits are handed out at 3 pm. Once obtained, the permit should be prominently displayed on the front windshield of your vehicle.
It’s crucial to return the permit before the center closes at 5 pm as failure to do so may prompt rangers to initiate a search.
For cave exploration, groups must consist of at least two individuals.
Each member must carry a flashlight or headlamp and wear closed-toed shoes. Cell phones do not count as a light source.
Littering or defacing natural formations within the cave is strictly prohibited and constitutes an offense punishable by law.
Laurel Cave is prone to occasional flooding, especially during the spring rainy season.
Permits may not be issued during periods of adverse weather or when water levels are high.
When obtaining our permits we were advised that water levels within the cave can range from ankle to knee-deep.
Laurel Cave is a sanctuary for several thousand Indiana Bats, and as such, it is closed annually from May 1st to Labor Day during their hibernation season.
The trailhead is conveniently situated just off the road, approximately half a mile from the welcome center, with parking spots available along the roadside.
A brief stroll leads to the expansive entrance of Laurel Cave. Be prepared for an exhilarating adventure and anticipate getting wet.
Throughout our exploration, we traversed through water for the majority of the journey inside the cave. At certain points, we encountered holes where the water level reached up to our knees, adding an extra thrill to the experience.
The allure of Laurel Cave lies in its captivating slot canyon-like formations, which dominate half of its expanse.
Sheer rock walls enclose you, with some areas providing barely enough space to advance step by step.
Traversing from one end of this natural wonder to the other is an awe-inspiring experience. Upon reaching the conclusion, we retraced our steps, savoring the journey once more.
While navigating through the cave, pay close attention to your footing, particularly in areas submerged in water. Hidden holes resulting from water erosion pose a potential risk for ankle injuries.
Exploring Laurel Cave without a guide was a rare treat for us, and we cherished every moment of the experience. We wholeheartedly recommend this cave exploration to others.
