6 Free Things To Do Near Chamberlain, South Dakota
Chamberlain, South Dakota is a city located on the east bank of the Missouri River.
The city was founded in 1881. Today it has a population of around 2,500 residents and serves as the county seat of Brule County.
We have taken multiple trips to Chamberlain and it’s sister city Oacoma and always have a good time.
Below are some free and cheap things visitors can see and do in the town.
Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center: This center can be found in the rest area off I-90 in Chamberlain, South Dakota. The center is free and commemorates the Lewis & Clark expedition through the state in 1803-1806.
An impressive replica of the expedition’s 55-foot keelboat is a highlight of the center.
Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center: The museum details the lives, cultures, traditions, and history of the Northern Plains Indians. The Tokéya uŋkí nájiŋpi Historical/Alumni Center added in 2013 documents the history and accomplishments of St. Joseph’s Indian School.
Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted.
Dignity of Earth and Sky Statue: This breathtaking stainless steel statue stands 50 feet high, 16 feet deep, and 32 feet wide. The statue honors the Lakota and Dakota Nations.
The statue is free to visit and located at the rest area off I-90 in Chamberlain, South Dakota.
Whitwam’s Wigwams: Also located at the rest area off I-90 in Chamberlain is one of the nine concrete tipis known as Whitman’s Wigwams. These creations stand 56 feet tall with a base of 35 feet in diameter.
Big Bison Statues at Al’s Oasis: Al’s oasis has a bar, restaurant, souvenir shop, and a grocery store. Across the street where the large rig parking area is located you will find three bison statues to take pictures with.
Bonus: We haven’t been in town for over a year but on the corner of W. King Street and S. Main Street is a funky fishing dog statue. Not sure if it’s still there but it’s completely worth checking out.

Chamberlain isn’t the largest town in the world but it’s still full of charm. Dine out at a local restaurant or shop in one of the unique shops on main street. Gas stations have slot machines in them if you like to gamble.
We stayed at Dude Ranch Lakeside Use Area right on the Missouri River during both our visits. It’s a cheap and safe spot to stay at.
