6 Free And Cheap Things To Do In Pipestone, Minnesota
Pipestone, Minnesota has a population of a little over 4,000 residents and is the county seat of Pipestone County.
It was incorporated as a village on February 10, 1881, and as a city on July 23, 1901. The city took its name from Pipestone County
Below are some cheap and free things to do during your visit
Pipestone National Monument: This 301-acre monument was founded in 1937 and is sacred to many American Indians. The site is still quarried for pipestone today.
There are a couple of nice hikes which include a trek to the very pretty Winnewissa Falls. Local artists are in the visitor center crafting pipestone works and are available to answer any questions visitors may have.
Admission is free.
Pipestone County Museum: This museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history and heritage of Pipestone County and the surrounding community.
A miniature replica of an old farmhouse in the area and a collection of vintage toasters were a couple of my favorite exhibits.
Admission is $3 per adult and kids 12 and under are free.
Fort Pipestone: Fort Pipestone is a replica of a fort that was established in the town in 1863. It is very small and acts mostly as a trading post selling a variety of gifts. I picked up some rocks for my collection for cheap though.
Admission is free.
Split Rock Creek State Park: This state park was established in 1937 and a dam was built in 1938 to create a lake for park visitors. Kayaking, swimming, and fishing are allowed and a trail surrounds the lake which crosses over the Split Rock Creek Bridge.
We stayed at the campground during our visit to the area and enjoyed it.
There is a $7 daily vehicle pass for visitors to the park.
World’s Largest Peace Pipe: Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers is a gift shop that showcases tribal pieces including peace pipes made from local pipestone.
In front of the gift shop stands the world’s largest peace pipe standing 30 feet tall.
Casey Jones State Trail: The Casey Jones State Trail is multi-purpose and serves as a hiking, running, and biking trail. It was one of the first trails to be established in the state and part of it starts in Pipestone.
During the summer bikes can be rented at the Ewert Recreation Center.
