During one of our travel days, we drove through Belle Fourche, South Dakota, and took a detour to explore the Center of the Nation Visitor Center and Tri-State Museum.
The center pays homage to the geographic center of the United States, featuring a striking 21-foot-wide compass rose-shaped monument crafted from locally sourced South Dakota granite, designed by the talented artist Monte Amende.
Encircling the compass is “The Avenue of Flags,” proudly displaying all 50 state flags alongside the national flags of the United States and Canada, adding a patriotic touch to the surroundings.
Visitors to the museum are greeted with insights into the region’s geographical significance, local history, and engaging cultural displays associated with the neighboring states. The museum operates during specific hours, while the monument remains accessible to visitors round the clock.
There is also a historic log cabin to explore on the property that was originally built by Black Hills pioneer Johnny Spaulding. Guests have the opportunity to step inside the cabin, provided that volunteers are present to facilitate the visit.
For those interested in pinpointing the actual geographic center of the 50 states, the coordinates are 44.96721, -103.77156. From the visitor center drive 13 miles on Highway 85 then turn left onto Old Highway 85. In 7.8 miles you’ll see a barn on the left side of the road.
On the right side of the road, you’ll see a US Flag flying in the pasture that has a survey marker marking the Center of the Nation. Do note that this area is privately owned, so it’s important to be considerate and respectful during any visit.
We didn’t have time to drive to the actual center, but still enjoyed the monument and museum. Should you find yourself in the vicinity, this free and brief stop promises a fascinating experience.
The museum features permanent exhibits and temporary and mini exhibits which are constantly rotating so you never know what you might discover.
