The Museum of the National Park Ranger is located near the entrance to Norris Campground at the Norris Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park.
The museum is housed in the Norris Soldier Station which was one of the original soldier stations built in 1908. It has been rebuilt, using original materials where possible and staying as true to the original floorplan as they could.
The museum is designed to showcase the history and contributions of National Park Rangers who have played a crucial role in preserving and protecting the natural and cultural resources of Yellowstone and other national parks.
Inside the museum, you can find exhibits that detail the history of the National Park Service, the evolution of park ranger uniforms and equipment, and the challenges rangers face in their duty to safeguard the parks.
A small auditorium shows the 25-minute movie, An American Legacy, which tells the story of the development of the National Park Service.
Be sure to walk around the outside as well where multiple informational boards are located.
Staffing is done primarily by retired National Park Service employees who volunteer their time.
The museum also functions as a visitor center, providing information about the Norris Geyser Basin and other aspects of Yellowstone National Park. Park rangers and staff are available to answer questions and offer guidance to visitors.
Please note that operating hours and accessibility may vary depending on the season, and it’s a good idea to check the official Yellowstone National Park website for the most up-to-date information on the Museum of the National Park Ranger, especially if you plan to visit.
When they are open hours are 10 am-4 pm.
