Hiking The Lake Overlook Trail In Yellowstone National Park
The Lake Overlook Trail is a 1.7-mile lollipop loop trail found within Yellowstone National Park.
You can access the trailhead at the corner of the West Thumb Geyser Basin parking area.
The hike involves an elevation gain of around 400 feet, making it moderately challenging. However, except for the steep ascent to the summit, I found it quite manageable.
As you embark on the journey, you’ll pass through a dense lodgepole pine forest and cross the South Entrance Road before reaching the loop section of the trail.
After traversing the forest and meadows, you’ll commence a gradual ascent leading to a stunning mountaintop meadow.
From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake and the distant Absaroka Mountains.
Take some time to savor these awe-inspiring views before descending via the steep trail. After passing through meadows and forests, you’ll return to the trailhead.
It’s worth noting that this trail passes by several remote thermal features, so it’s crucial to stay on the designated path to prevent accidents.
During your hike, keep a vigilant eye out for wildlife, as you never know what might cross your path.
Be especially cautious, as there is bear activity in the area, and it’s advisable to carry bear spray when hiking in Yellowstone National Park.
