Salem Sue is the World’s Largest Holstein Cow and can be found in New Salem, North Dakota.
This enormous fiberglass Holstein cow statue is 38 feet high, 50 feet long, weighs 12,000 pounds, and is visible for 5 miles.
Salem Sue was erected in 1974 as a tribute to the importance of the dairy industry in the region. It was built for the New Salem Lions Club by Sculpture Mfg. Co. of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
She was shipped in three parts and then erected on School Hill between the city of New Salem and I-94 Highway. The project cost approximately $40,000 which was donated by dairymen, farmers, businessmen, the dairy industry, and residents of the area.
A road leads up to the base of the statue where visitors can get out and take pictures of this udderly enormous cow. The detail is amazing including the veins on her udders.
The views from the top include miles of farmland and prairie.
Salem Sue has become a popular roadside attraction and a symbol of New Salem and the surrounding area. She is free to view, but they do accept donations that are used to help repaint here whenever she needs a shiny new hide.
We love roadside attractions and Salem Sue is one that should not be missed if you happen to be in this area of North Dakota.
