Hiking The Spatter Cones and Snow Cone Trails In Craters of the Moon National Monument
The Spatter Cones Trail and the Snow Cone Trail are located inside the Craters of the Moon National Monument in Idaho.
These short easy trails begin in the same parking lot and are great for the whole family. The Snow Cone Trail is wheelchair accessible.
Spatter cones are made when hot lumps of lava are ejected from a vent. As the lava lands on top of each other, they cool and adhere to nearby pieces to form a wall.
These two short trails allow you to peer inside these miniature volcanoes. The Snow Cone actually had snow in it so no surprise how it got its name.
Informational boards can be found near the cones providing more details. These are cool little geological formations that take very little time to explore so they are worth a stop during your visit to the park.
If you would like a longer hike the North Crater Trail also starts in this parking lot. We didn’t have time to hike it but it’s a total of 3.5 miles and travels through Big Craters and North Crater.
