Shoshone Falls Park is a popular tourist attraction located near Twin Falls, Idaho.
Shoshone Falls is a natural waterfall located on the Snake River and is one of the largest natural waterfalls in the United States.
It is often referred to as the “Niagara of the West” due to its impressive size and beauty. The falls have a height of about 212 feet, making them higher than Niagara Falls. The falls are also 900 feet wide.
The flow of the Shoshone Falls is dependent on the season and the amount of snowmelt and rainfall in the area. Spring is the best time to see Shoshone Falls due to snow melt.
In the Fall there is a minimal flow and may even appear nearly dry at times. Snake River is diverted each year to irrigate 500,000 acres of farmland causing the minimal flow of the falls.
Shoshone Falls Park offers various viewpoints and observation areas for visitors to enjoy the stunning scenery and take photographs.
The main viewing platform is just 75 feet away from the main parking lot.
You can also hike the canyon rim trail and view Shoshone Falls from multiple vantage points. I’m not sure how long the trail is because we only hiked it to the first viewing platform. It does continue past this point though.
There are picnic areas to relax in and pets are allowed in the park so bring your furry friends along. Multiple informational boards are located near the main platform for visitors to learn more about this amazing attraction.
The Shoshone Falls is a breathtaking sight to witness as the water cascades over the rocky cliffs. We even saw a couple of rainbows while admiring the falls.
The views of Snake River down the canyon are pretty great as well.
I highly suggest walking the trail to the first platform for a unique look at the falls during your visit.
If you are anywhere near this park during your travels make it a priority to stop. You won’t be disappointed!
Shoshone Falls is open year-round from dawn to dusk with the exception of temporary closures due to poor road conditions. A fee of $5 per vehicle is in effect from March 1st through September 30th.
Also, be aware that the falls may not always be running. The flow of Shoshone Falls is determined 20 miles upstream at Milner Dam by the United States Department of Reclamation which manages the reservoir system.
Their official website does have a live video feed you can check before your visit.
