We were looking for a quiet spot to hunker down for the 4th of July holiday with water access and struck gold with Woodruff Narrows Reservoir.
This free camping area is run by the Wyoming Game & Fish Department and has a 16-day stay limit. Campsites are on a first come, first served basis and is open year-round.
The reservoir is about 10 miles off the highway on a good dirt road.
This is a boondocking spot so no water or hook-ups can be found here. There are vault toilets at the very beginning and end of the reservoir.
There are no trashcans so whatever you pack in make sure you pack out.
Pets are allowed, but please be sure to pick up after them.
We had both Verizon and AT&T service during our stay.
There were homemade fire rings for visitors to have campfires. Be sure to check on any fire restrictions in the area before starting a fire.
Make sure every spark is out before going to bed or leaving camp.
There are a variety of sites to choose from here and any size rig can fit. There is no shade though and it can get windy.
If you’re running solar you’ll have no issues topping off your batteries.
A number of side roads will take you to camping spots on the water’s edge. I highly suggest walking down these side roads before hauling your rig down one.
Most of the side roads are in good shape, but there are some very rutted ones as well.
You may also camp at either restroom parking area and there are multiple spots off the road.
We actually camped at two spots during our stay. Our first spot was near the road and then we moved closer to the water for the holiday.
There are boat ramps near each bathroom. We saw a few fishermen on the water while we were there and a couple of jet skis as well.
We kayaked at least half a dozen times during our stay and that was a lot of fun. We just carried our kayak down to the water from our campsites.
We saw a ton of pelicans, seagulls, various duck species, great blue herons, and more waterfowl during our visit. Everest our cat had a lot of fun watching all the birds fly around.
The town of Evanston is about 25 minutes away and has everything you could need including a Walmart. We stocked up on food, alcohol, and supplies, and got our laundry done.
We must have walked all the side roads during our stay and there’s a lot to walk. This is a popular spot for OHV riders so you will see dirt bikes and ATVs rolling around.
We loved our stay here and would come back in a heartbeat. It is gorgeous and I spent hours just sitting outside enjoying the scenery.
Two thumbs up stay for sure!
I will note that the mosquitos here were pretty bad. They were just tiny little things with a voracious appetite for our blood. Make sure you have plenty of bug spray.
We have a Thermacell mosquito repellent system and it works great.
Always follow the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and try to leave your camp nicer than you found it. Please research campgrounds before visiting. Rules and regulations may have changed since we stayed there.
