Hiking The Grand Wash Trail In Capitol Reef National Park
Grand Wash is a popular hiking trail located in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah.
It is known for its stunning canyon scenery and narrow canyon walls, making it a memorable experience for hikers.
This is an easy hike for the whole family to enjoy and was one of our favorites during our visit.
The park website says it’s a total of 4.40 miles, but we clocked it in at 5.50 miles with a little over 200 feet of elevation gain.
You will begin the hike at the Grand Wash Trailhead. To reach the trailhead take the Grand Wash Road located along the Scenic Drive approximately 3 1/2 miles from the visitor center.
There is a 27-foot vehicle limit for Grand Wash Road Road.
Also, this is a canyon so do not hike if rainstorms are pending due to the chance of dangerous flash floods.
The parking area is not the largest and fills up during the day. I suggest going early in the morning or later in the day to hike.
The trailhead also gives visitors access to the Cassidy Arch Trail which I also recommend if you’re up for a bigger challenge.
The trail follows the wash through the canyon and is mostly flat and sandy, with occasional rocky sections.
Remember to bring appropriate footwear, sun protection, and plenty of water, as the desert can be hot and dry.
Hiking through Grand Wash provides incredible views of towering canyon walls, colorful rock formations, and the unique geology of the area. Keep an eye out for interesting rock formations and the variety of desert vegetation that thrives in the wash.
The trail ends at the junction with Utah State Highway 24. You could also start your hike from here if you wanted. Take a break in the picnic area then return the way you came to finish the hike.
If you are short on time in the park this is one trail, along with the Capitol Gorge Trail, that I would not miss during your visit. It’s just a fun easy and beautiful hike.
Always check the current trail conditions, weather forecasts, and any park advisories before embarking on the Grand Wash trail.
