Hiking To Cassidy Arch In Capitol Reef National Park
The Cassidy Arch Trail is a scenic hiking trail in Capitol Reef National Park in Utah that leads to the iconic Cassidy Arch.
Named after the notorious outlaw Butch Cassidy, who supposedly used the area as a hideout, the trail offers beautiful views of the park’s red rock landscape.
We clocked the trail in at 3.4 miles with approximately 620 feet of elevation gain.
The trail begins at the Grand Wash Trailhead. Take the Grand Wash road located along the Scenic Drive approximately 3 1/2 miles from the visitor center.
There is a 27-foot vehicle limit for this road.
Also, this is a canyon so do not hike if rainstorms are pending due to the chance of dangerous flash floods.
There is a parking area available for visitors but it’s not the largest and fills up during the day. I suggest going early in the morning or later in the day.
The trailhead also gives visitors access to the popular Grand Wash Trail which I highly recommend.
This is considered a moderately strenuous hike. It involves elevation gain and traverses rocky terrain, so sturdy hiking shoes and plenty of water are recommended.
Don’t forget your sunscreen as well.
You are walking on the cliff edge during a few parts so be sure to hug the canyon wall (the hubby really didn’t like these parts).
It’s a gradual uphill climb all the way to the arch. The beginning has you traversing steep switchbacks up the canyon and it’s quite a workout (or it was for me).
The good news is it’s an easy downhill trek all the way back to your vehicle.
Along the Cassidy Arch Trail, hikers will encounter stunning red rock formations, cliffs, and panoramic views of the park’s rugged landscape. The highlight of the trail is reaching Cassidy Arch, a natural sandstone arch perched high above the surrounding canyons.
To reach the arch in the final part of the hike you must travel over large expanses of slickrock. Be very careful if the rock is wet because it becomes extremely slippery.
Once you are done snapping some pics turn around and return to the trailhead. Enjoy your hike and the scenic wonders of Capitol Reef National Park!
