Hiking To The Hickman Bridge In Capitol Reef National Park
Hickman Bridge is a popular natural rock formation and hiking destination located in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah.
It is one of the park’s most iconic features and draws visitors from all over who come to marvel at its beauty.
The Hickman Bridge Trail is a moderate almost two-mile round-trip hike with approximately 450 feet of elevation gain.
The trail takes you through a scenic desert landscape, with red rock cliffs and panoramic views of the surrounding area.
The trailhead is located off Utah State Route 24 (38.28872, -111.22757) approximately two miles past the Capitol Reef National Park Visitors Center.
This is a very popular hike in the park so I suggest getting there very early or later in the day to ensure finding a parking spot. The parking lot is quite small in my opinion and often fills up.
I also want to mention that you can access the Navajo Knobs and Rim Overlook trails from this trailhead if you wanted a much longer day of hiking.
Hickman Bridge is a natural bridge, which is essentially a rock arch formed by the erosive forces of water and weathering over millions of years. It spans approximately 133 feet across and stands about 125 feet high.
It is an impressive sight to behold.
Along the trail, you’ll pass through a narrow canyon and ascend a series of switchbacks before reaching the Hickman Bridge itself. The views during the hike are pretty epic as well.
The trail is uphill most of the way and those switchbacks are a bit steep.
You will get a pretty good workout hiking to the bridge, but the destination at the end is worth it. Plus it’s an easy downhill stroll back to your vehicle.
This is an interpretive trail and a trail guide is available at the trailhead for a mere fifty cents. Look for the markers along the trail and refer to the guide for information about the geology, flora, and fauna of the area.
Once you reach the bridge, you can walk underneath it and explore the area around it.
You can’t really understand how massive Hickman Bridge is until you are standing underneath this geological wonder and looking up at it.
The bridge provides a unique vantage point to appreciate the geological formations and the rugged beauty of Capitol Reef National Park. It’s a great spot to take photographs or simply take in the natural splendor.
Hickman Bridge is a must-visit attraction within Capitol Reef National Park, offering a rewarding hiking experience and a chance to witness the remarkable forces of nature at work.
