We wanted to go visit the Fayetteville area of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve and were looking for a spot not too far from the park.
New River Campground is situated right on the banks of the National New River and is only a 30-minute drive from the park.
Reservations are recommended but not required at the campground.
To make a reservation call them at (304) 632-9821 or email them at [email protected].
They have between 30-40 full hookup sites (water, electric, and sewer) and 13 rustic sites (tents only, no utilities).
The sites seemed pretty level and any size rig can fit in most spots.
About half of the sites back right up to the banks of the river.
They are a little close together for my taste, but the views of the river are pretty great.
Each site contains a fire ring, grill, and picnic table.
Place campfires in rings only and please make sure every spark is out before leaving camp or going to bed.
Full-hookup sites are $34 for 30 amps and $40 for 50 amps.
Tent only sites are $26 a night.
Weekly and monthly rates are also available for all sites at a slight discount.
Their bathhouse is only available to those who are tent camping and/or camping without built-in restrooms. The bathhouse has showers and restrooms.
The bathhouse also has a small laundry room with a couple of washers and dryers that are open 24/7. It’s a bit old but we still managed to wash a couple of loads.
There is a boat launch and shelter available for campers to use.
They also sell firewood if you would like to have a campfire.
If you need to dump, but don’t need to spend the night they charge $7 for those traveling through.
Check in and check out is 12 pm.
Campsites are limited to 2 vehicles per site.
Pets are welcome but keep them on a leash and pick up after them.
We had cell service, but of course, I didn’t write it down again so I don’t remember if it was with Verizon or AT&T (sorry).
Cathedral Falls and Kanawha Falls are only a couple minute drive from the campground.
Hawks Nest State Park is 15 minutes away.
As I mentioned earlier the Fayetteville area of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is only 30 minutes away.
We hiked the Long Point Trail and Endless Wall Trail during our visit.
We also checked out the Canyon Rim Visitor Center and walked the Canyon Rim Boardwalk trail there to check out the bridge.
The trails are great and pet friendly so don’t forget your fur babies.
This is an older campground and you can tell.
During our visit it had flooded recently as well so some sites were down and there was a bit of chaos.
We still had a great time here and you can’t beat the price for full hook-ups and the views from your campfire right on the banks of the river.
It’s a great location for visiting a number of attractions and we would stay here again.
Always follow the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and try to leave your camp nicer than you found it. Please research campgrounds before visiting. Rules and regulations may have changed since we stayed there.
