In January of 1972 Metropolis, Illinois was authorized by D.C. Comics to become the adopted “Home of Superman”.
The city embraced this honor by holding an annual Superman Celebration, erecting the World’s Largest Superman Statue, and erecting a bronze statue of actress Noel Neill as Lois Lane in the city.
Images of the man of steel can be seen while walking down the streets and many businesses sell Superman souvenirs.
The Super Museum has one of the largest Superman collections around though.
The Super Museum is a family owned and operated business that opened in 1993. The founder, Jim Hambrick, has been working on this Superman collection for almost 60 years.
The museum now features over 70,000 Superman related items and has been featured in multiple TV shows.
The museum covers the entire history of Superman in both comics, television, and film.
See a costume from the original Superman, George Reeves, as well as props from movies and shows such as Smallville. The museum actually has a lot of authenticated props.
I believe they rotate their collection on a regular basis and were actually doing some construction during our visit to expand the viewing space.
Besides the props there are a lot of cool items tucked away in the museum.
My issue with the place is everything is really crammed together and isn’t displayed in a great manner. There are so many items in one spot that it’s easy to miss something.
If you’re a huge Superman fan you are going to love this place!
If you’re not a huge fan the $8 price tag is a bit high (in my opinion). If I would have only paid 5 bucks I would have been much happier.
I’m still glad we went though because we have a rule during our travels that any unique museum we stumble across under 10 bucks we stop at.
The Super Museum is a unique museum and I did discover a number of fun items inside. If Superman ever had his face plastered on an item you will find it here.
The giant Doomsday was very cool.
If you don’t want to tour the museum you can still go inside and visit the gift shop and make a purchase.
The outside of the building is fun as well with a number of photo-ops available for visitors.
The World’s Largest Superman Statue stands right by the museum so don’t forget to snap a pic.
