The Metropolis Hope Light Lighthouse is located at the entrance to Dorothy Miller Park in Metropolis, Illinois on the banks of the Ohio River.
The lighthouse was dedicated on November 5, 2014, and is the world’s first lighthouse designed, built, and dedicated to the fight against cancer.
Its purpose is to promote early cancer detection and navigate people to resources to go for help.
The 30-foot tall lighthouse was designed to resemble a real lighthouse and is even equipped with an ML-155 Marine Lantern with a flashing white light. I’ve seen pictures where it’s lit up at night.
It’s an official Illinois state tourism attraction
October is breast cancer awareness month so they had a large pink ribbon attached to the lighthouse during our visit. It’s a cute little park and the views of the Ohio River are pretty nice.
While driving through town we just happened to see a sign for the lighthouse and decided to check it out. It’s a quick stop and a nice little attraction in town.
