Hiking The Honker Lake Trail At Land Between The Lakes
The Honker Lake Trail is a 4.9 mile loop trail located in Land Between the Lakes in Kentucky.
This easy-to-moderate trail is pet friendly and has around 300 feet of elevation gain.
The trailhead (36.90014, -88.03608) can be found near the Woodlands Nature Station right next to the trailhead for Long Creek Trail. You could also start at the Nature Station.
The trail is easy to follow just keep a lookout for the white diamonds. There are also a few signs.
We thought this trail was a pretty easy hike.
We are not speedy while hiking at all and managed to finish this in an hour and fifty minutes. There are a couple of climbs, but nothing too strenuous.
Honker Lake is around 180 acres and was named after the Canada geese that can often be found here. Also keep your eyes open for osprey, bald eagles, and a variety of other waterfowl.
If you’re lucky you might spy a beaver or otter swimming around!
The trail takes you through a variety of landscapes including meadows, forests, and of course the shoreline of Honker Lake. The trail was originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
The lake is a popular spot for fishermen, kayakers, and canoers.
We started near the Long Creek Trailhead and walked through the woods for about two and a half miles before coming up to a road and amazing open views of Honker Lake.
After snapping some pics we walked over the dam and got even more impressive views of this very pretty lake. Walking across the dam was the highlight of this hike for us.
The trail continues on through the woods then connects with the Woodland Walk Trail.
You follow that trail up to the visitor center then cross the parking lot and continue on the Woodland/Honker trail till you reach your vehicle.
We really liked this hike and even though it’s a bit long I still think it’s easy enough for even kids to tackle.
If you’re able, this is one of the best hikes we did in the Land Between the Lakes recreation area and would highly recommend it during your visit.
We even made a little turtle friend that terrified our dog and we ended up having to pick him up and carry him, lol.
