Hiking The Sand Cave Trail At Mammoth Cave National Park
The Sand Cave Trail is located in Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky.
The parking lot for the trailhead (37.15276, -86.04787) can be accessed off of Cave City Road.
An official Mammoth Cave National Park sign is also located at the trailhead for photo ops.
This easy 0.3 mile out-and-back trail has practically no elevation gain, is on a boardwalk making it handicap accessible and it’s also pet friendly.
A sign at the beginning of the trail and at the end tell the tragic story of this cave.
Cave explorer Floyd Collins became trapped in a crawlspace 55 feet underground in Sand Cave when his foot got stuck by a falling rock.
Rescuers spent over two weeks attempting to get Floyd out. On the 18th they finally reached him, but it was too late. His body now rests in the Mammoth Cave Baptist Church Cemetery.
From the parking lot you will travel across the boardwalk till you reach the Sand Cave lookout point. After taking a pic or two of the cave turn around and head back to your vehicle.
Please do not enter the cave.
Most people stop and take pics at the national park sign so why not take an extra fifteen minutes and walk the Sand Cave Trail.
It’s not super exciting, but it’s easy enough for the whole family and has a story to tell as well.
