While visiting Mammoth Cave National Park we decided to check out Cave City, Kentucky nearby to see what cheesy tourist traps we could find.
We passed Big Mike’s Rock Shop and just had to stop, because I never pass up a rock shop.
Stretched out beside the rock shop was a giant fiberglass mosasaur, AKA Big Mo. This roadside attraction I’m sure brings plenty of business to the shop and he’s pretty cool.
We snapped multiple pics with Big Mo before heading into the shop to do some shopping.
Please remember to not climb on Big Mo. His old bones can’t handle it anymore. He already has a couple holes in him and we’re hoping he doesn’t acquire anymore.
The rock shop was awesome and had a wide variety of rocks, minerals, geodes and fossils to choose from. I restrained myself from purchasing half the shop and only picked up a couple more rocks for my collection.
Across from the rock shop is the souvenir shop. This building is full of kitschy souvenirs for Mammoth Park, Kentucky and of course Big Mo.
The upper level of this shop is where you’ll find the real prize though.
A five foot skull of a Mosasaur (also named Big Mo) is on display inside a glass case. It has 29 teeth that range in length from 1 1/2 to 4 inches.
The skull was discovered in the summer of 1994 in a Pierre shale formation in the northwestern United States. A sign by the display says it’s the world’s largest fossilized mosasaur skull (of a Tylosaurus).
We are big dinosaur fans so this skull has a great bonus find for us.
Big Mike’s Also has a Mystery House you can explore for the low, low price of $2. Unfortunately it was closed during our visit.
If you love rocks, dinos and roadside attractions be sure to make a stop at Big Mike’s Rock Shop while on your trip to Mammoth Cave National Park.
