While hiking and exploring in Hocking Hills in Ohio we came across a unique little museum we just had to stop at.
Located in a tiny shed next to the Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center you will find the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum.
Reverend Paul Johnson’s wife bought him a couple metal car pencil sharpeners in 1989 as a gift and the obsession began.
For the next 20 years he just kept adding to his collection, which now has approximately 3,450 pieces and not one of them is a duplicate. The collection has been featured in multiple national magazines.
Safely protected behind plexiglass you can view the sharpeners in all their glory.
They are mostly categorized in groups like animals, Disney, military, music, food, vehicles, holidays and many more. The sharpeners are made with multiple mediums including wood, metal, plastic and even glass.
I really liked the music section and a group of animals that looked very old.
Rumor is it’s the largest collection of pencil sharpeners in the United States and maybe the world?
After his death in 2010 his wife agreed to move his collection, shed and all, to the welcome center. It’s new home was dedicated on May 13, 2011.
We love unique little museums and roadside attractions like this and always make the effort to stop whenever possible. If your in the area it’s worth the ten minute stop to look at.
Did I mention it’s free?
Who doesn’t love free!
Also, the welcome center has a ton of information on the area with restrooms and is just steps away.
