Hiking The Elk Mountain Trail At Wind Cave National Park
The Elk Mountain Interactive Nature Trail is a easy 1 mile loop trail located at Wind Cave National Park. Leashed pets are allowed on this trail.
The trail begins in the Elk Mountain Campground, across from the amphitheater. Normally an interpretive guide is available at the trailhead for 50 cents. The guide coordinates with numbered posts along the trail for an in-depth look at the local flora, fauna and history. I usually always pick these up, but unfortunately they were out on our visit.
During this hike you will travel though the grasslands and forests surrounding the park campground. The only real part we enjoyed of this hike was the beginning. After traveling up the hill you will be greeted with some pretty nice views of the surrounding areas. A lone bison was on the prairie and I loved the pic I took of him.
Most of the hike you are just walking around the campground though and it’s pretty boring in my opinion. Maybe if I would of been able to pick up one of those guides it would of been a bit more entertaining and educational.
If you happen to be waiting on a cave tour though it’s a great way to waste 30 minutes. The campground is literally only a couple minute drive from the visitor center. It may not be very exciting, but it still beats sitting at a picnic table at the visitor center twiddling your thumbs.
If nothing else you’ll get in a little exercise and maybe see a bison!
