Because of a small medical condition, I was forced to start a new diet this year which basically cut out every single one of my favorite foods.
At the very top of that list was pizza!
I mean who doesn’t love pizza?
Up to this point, I had only had it three times all year.
Since we don’t have an oven we have become experts at baking homemade pizzas on the grill over the last year and a half of full-time travel. We use to make pizza every week, but sadly those days have past.
It had been so long since we had devoured a slice and after a visit to the Black Hills Mining Museum in Lead, South Dakota we passed the Pizza Lab on the way back to Deadwood.
I was starving and made the executive decision to stop and have pizza for the fourth time this year. I knew I would regret the decision later, but didn’t care.
Pizza Lab is an independently owned and family-operated establishment that’s been in operation for over a decade. They offer dine-in, carry-out, and delivery.
They once had a lunch buffet special, but that is no longer available (just in case you read it in online reviews). Besides pizza, they also serve ribs, wings, breadsticks, and salads.
For dessert choose from one of their nearly dozen flavors of ice cream. Did I forget to mention they have a full bar too, because they do.
Once you enter the restaurant you order your pizza at the counter and take a seat. When your order is ready they bring it to your table.
Besides the tried and true pizza favorites, they also offer a variety of specialty pizzas including the Bacon Cheeseburger, Holey Hannah, Cordon Bleu, and Pesto Genovese. One of these specialty pizzas is what we ended up choosing.
Our pizza was called the Stuffed Crust Pepperoni and Bacon.
The pizza consisted of mozzarella and bacon layered between two thin crusts with pepperoni and cheese on top. The menu stated it was their newest pizza creation so we decided to try it out.
I thought the pizza was good, but nothing super special.
Jamey liked the generous amount of cheese it was loaded with (he’s a cheese addict) and thought it was good as well.
We had leftovers that he consumed that evening and declared the pizza was better cold. We both agreed it needed more sauce. The actual pepperonis and bacon were quite tasty though.
Let’s talk about their cheese sticks for a moment though, because those babies were divine!
Literally some of the best cheese sticks I’ve ever had.
They were served with a very generous amount of marinara sauce on the side which was equally delicious. If in the area in the future, I would totally stop in just for a full order of these babies again.
Truly top-notch in my opinion. I enjoyed them way more than the pizza for sure.
While waiting for your pizza to be made you can entertain yourself with one of the number of arcade games they have on the premises.
Jamey and I love arcades so this was an added treat.
They had one pinball machine called Strikes and Spares that we had never seen before. We might have dropped a few bucks playing multiple games on that one and had a lot of fun doing it.
If arcades aren’t your thing try playing a game of pool. They have two pool tables in the restaurant as well.
The walls of this pizza joint are covered with old posters and flyers of music festivals and special events that have been held over the years in the surrounding areas. A lot of pics of old cars too if you’re into that sort of thing.
I spent a bit of time just walking around the place and checking them all out. Very cool!
Even though it wasn’t our favorite pizza ever it was still good. The employees were incredibly nice, the place looks cool, and the atmosphere is pretty great.
If pizza is your thing I say give this place a shot.
Just because we didn’t love the particular pizza we chose doesn’t mean we wouldn’t have loved a different one. Also, stopping in for the cheese bread alone is worth it!
