We spent two weeks camping in Mule Canyon about 30 minutes from Blanding, Utah and had a great time. The amount of ruins to explore and hiking in the area is amazing.
Though Blanding might be a small town it hosts a number of unique museums including The Dinosaur Museum.
Your visit to the museum will include a look at replicas and actual fossils of dinosaur skeletons, footprints, eggs and skin from the Four Corners region and around the world.
When you first walk in three petrified trees are on display that are older than even the dinosaurs. Signs say there are only six in the world that are that old and they have half of them, not to shabby. The main entry room hosts a number of impressive skeletons and replicas of dinosaurs including a T-Rex skull.
The History Hall of Hollywood Dinosaur Movies was by far my favorite room. I read that it has the largest collection of dinosaur movies posters in the world. Massive old movie posters from around the globe lined the walls.
They also had various movie props on display. A very cool exhibit was an actual stop-motion model used in the original 1933 film classic King Kong. Jamey spent some time trying to figure out how to sneak that baby out 😉
This room also has a special feature on feathered dinosaurs including a replica of a 14 foot tall Therizinosaurus which had a 20 foot wingspan.
Six life-size ten foot long Deinonychus raptors are also featured. Some are feathered and some aren’t to show the differences in the way they may have appeared while alive.
The sculptures of dinosaurs throughout the museum were exquisitely detailed.
Each exhibit was interesting and well thought out. One exhibit showed x-rays taking of dinosaur fossils still embedded in rock that I found exceptionally cool. The exhibits on the fossilized dinosaur skin and eggs was pretty sweet as well.
They had the skull of an Ankylosaurus on display which is my absolutely favorite dinosaur in the world.
My second favorite dinosaur is the Stegosaurus and they had plates from this great reptile on display as well. Did I mention they have a Tyrannosaurus from Mongolia and the cast of a mummified Edmontosaurus.?
The Dinosaur Museum in Blanding was founded in 1992 by paleontologists Stephen and Sylvia Czerkas.
We try to hit these small dinosaur museums whenever we come across them and this one was a lot of fun. For such a small fee you get to see so many cool exhibits and artifacts on display and is 100% worth a visit.
