One of the most recognized and visited places located within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is the geological phenomenon known as Horseshoe Bend!
This incised meander of the Colorado River curves round by 270º creating the horseshoe shape it was named after. When you stand on the rim of the cliff you will be staring down a 1,100 foot drop to the river below.
After paying your 10 bucks for parking you will have about a 3/4 mile walk out to the edge overlooking Horseshoe Bend.
The parking lot and paved path to the site have been recently redone. It is wheelchair accessible and has two large shade areas to rest under. The path has a slight incline on your way back to your vehicle and it gets hot here so sunscreen and water should be on your essentials list.
Apparently holidays and weekends can get really busy at this little tourist attraction. When this happens and the parking lot is full the City of Page may require visitors to use their shuttle system to visit.
Horseshoe Bend itself is just breathtaking.
I have seen so many pictures of it online and it was one of the top items on my bucket list when we started traveling full-time. The views of the surrounding area on your hike there are pretty incredible as well.
There are guardrails in place so you don’t fall to your death getting the perfect pic.
For the brave at heart there are plenty of areas without rails around the bend to get that Instagram worthy shot. If you’re lucky while your staring down at the river below you might just see a kayaker or two. They look like tiny ants swimming on the water.
Horseshoe Bend has become so popular on social media over the last few years that many travelers now make it a mandatory stop on their Grand Canyon National Park trips and you should too! It will take you less than an hour for the whole stop and in my opinion it’s worth every single minute of it.
Did I mention your furry companions are welcome as well?
That’s just another reason to take the time for a visit don’t you think?
