Meet Iron And Gem Star
While walking down main street of Hill City, South Dakota you will encounter quite a bit of art.
One piece that really caught my eye was a life sized metal sculpture of a horse named Iron Star located in front of the store Jewel of the West.
Iron Star was created by South Dakota artist John Lopez. Using the dimensions from his Uncle Geno’s stallion, Frenchman’s Mr. Tough, he created an exquisite piece of art from scrap metal and old tools.
Examining the sculpture is like participating in a treasure hunt.
Can you find the hand tools, shovels, chains, files and barbed wire masterfully worked into the sculpture? Truck shocks were used to form the horse’s legs. There’s even little horses mixed in to complete the stallions look.
Beside Iron Star stands a little colt named Gem Star. Gem was created by artist Garry Underwood. Gem is also a beautifully made sculpture created using scrap metal and rusty spare parts.
The pair make quite the little attraction that makes passerbys stop to take a minute to admire some truly creative pieces of art.
