Who doesn’t love cheesy photo ops!
The Post Office and Federal Courthouse in the city of Texarkana is the only one in the U.S. that sits in two states. As the name implies it straddles the state lines of Texas and Arkansas. It has two separate zip codes and is the 2nd most photographed U.S. courthouse in the nation (I’m sure you can guess who made #1). The building finished construction in 1933. In 2000 it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The inside of the building is all business, because it is a working courthouse and post office, but outside they have set up a fun photo op for the public. Nicknamed Photographers island visitors can straddle the state line between Arkansas and Texas while standing in front of a sign marking your location. The building sits in the middle of a roundabout so be careful of traffic.
The Confederate Mothers Monument also sits in front of the courthouse/post office. It was dedicated on April 21, 1918 and designed by Henry Allen.
We just love these quirky little stops. They are always quick little fun distractions while traveling and are almost always free. If your into flea markets and discount retail stores Texarkana has a ton and we spent the day shopping and find some great deals.
Unless your really into these little roadside attractions like we are I wouldn’t go out of your way to visit, but if your driving by why not take the extra 15 minutes to stop. You can stretch your legs and get a fun pic for instagram. Plus it’s not every day you can say you stood in two states at the same time.
