Standing on a bluff overlooking the Missouri river outside the tourism center near Chamberlain, South Dakota between exits 263 and 265 stands an incredible statue honoring the Lakota and Dakota Nations.
Dignity of Earth and Sky is her name and she is a breathtaking piece of art.
This stainless steel statue stands 50 feet high, 16 feet deep and 32 feet wide. The star quilt held by Dignity features 128 stainless steel blue diamond shapes that are designed to move in the wind. At night, LED lights make the diamonds glitter in the night sky.
Dignity made her debut on September 17, 2016. The statue was a $1 million gift to the people of South Dakota from Norm and Eunabel McKie of Rapid City to celebrate the 125 year anniversary of its statehood.
Spearfish artist and sculptor Dale Lamphere designed the statue while artist David Claymore helped create the quilt. Photographs of three different Lakota women from Rapid City were studied to create the beautiful face of Dignity.
Dignity is clearly visible from the interstate while your driving to the welcome center.
I was astonished by her immense size while standing by her and in awe of her beauty. This is seriously one of the most amazing things we have encountered on our journey so far and if you are driving anywhere near Chamberlain, South Dakota it is a must stop.
If you needed another reason to visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center is also housed here and has alot of great information and displays.
