Hiking The Caroline Dormon Trail In Kisatchie National Forest
The Caroline Dormon Trail is located in the Kisatchie National Forest of Louisiana.
It is 10.5 miles one way and is used by hikers, bikers and horse riders. It makes a great little weekend backpacking trip. If you wanted to stretch it out a few more days it can easily be done by hiking on the connecting Backbone trail and/or the Sandstone multi-use trail in the area.
There are primitive camping sites located on the trail or in campgrounds nearby off the Backbone or Sandstone trail.
The trailhead is located just off the Longleaf Scenic Byway (FH 59). It has a large parking lot, information kiosk and bathrooms. The trail begins here and it ends just short of the Kisatchie Bayou Recreation Complex which has camping.
Several water sources are available on the trail so water shouldn’t be an issue. You will cross many forests roads and small streams while walking the trail. Dogs are allowed as long as they are leashed and the trail is well marked with orange markers (if I remember correctly).
Since we were stuck in this area for a couple months during the pandemic we walked multiple parts of this trail.
I really don’t know how much of it we actually traveled because we kept picking it up at different road crossings and backtracked a few times. It really is a lovely hike and a quick and fun weekend getaway if you have the time.
