Little green men don’t live here, but it’s not often you see spaceships in the middle of the city. Fewer than 100 Futuro houses were built during the late 1960s and early 1970s and it is estimated around 60 still remain. The first one was developed in 1968.
These unique buildings were designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. The structures have an airplane hatch entrance and are composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastic. They measure 13 feet high and 26 feet in diameter. They were able to accommodate 8 individuals and sold for between $12,000 and $18,000.
This was our first stop on our first road trip with “Frankenstein”. I had always heard about these flying saucer houses before and seen pics online so when we were driving right by one we just had to stop. They look pretty darn cool and I would definitely not have a problem setting up home in one.
NOTE: This house is located on a dead-end street with a small turn-around at the end. It was tight for us to get turned around with the envoy and pup attached. Any bigger vehicle would not be able to make it down this street and turn around.
