Demopolis Town Square, also known as Confederate Park, is a historic park located in the city of Demopolis, Alabama, United States.
It happens to be one of the oldest public squares in the state of Alabama and the park was established in 1819. It covers a total of one city block, surrounded by Main, Capitol, Walnut and Washington Streets.
The park contains a pavilion which was built around 1886.
There are several benches to sit on and a very old wooden merry go round (which I thought looked so cool). There are public restrooms and water fountains located in the park.
The center of the park features a large cast iron fountain built in 1895.
There are plenty of very colorful and large Koi swimming around in it. A Victorian-era gazebo stands near the corner of Walnut Avenue and Washington Street.
A large Confederate statue was erected at the intersection of Main and Capitol Streets. Be careful of the traffic if trying to get a picture!
The park was renamed “Confederate Park” in 1923, at the request of United Daughters of the Confederacy. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1975.
